Door panels Perhaps the most common issue for clients is the lack of stained glass in their front door. This is usually because the constant opening and closing does shorten the life of the stained glass panels inserted into it. Once the lead disintegrated through metal fatigue, many householders replaced the panels with ordinary glass. It is easy to reintroduce stained glass panels to doors especially if one of the neighbours has the original design. Some clients prefer to have one large panel rather than two and with a small amount of woodworking to remove the central wooden strut, a new look can be achieved. The key benefits of reverting back to stained glass panels in the door are:
It is a widely held view by estate agents that the cost of restoring original features to a period property greatly increases its value and the costs involved can be seen as an investment.
Window panels These are commissioned for both old and new properties as stained glass can be accommodated in their triple glazed form into UPVC windows as well as traditional wooden frames. Modern designs can also be commissioned for newer properties as well as the more traditional designs which reflect the age of the house e.g. a house built in the 1930's usually has an 'Art Deco' design and an Edwardian House, an 'Art Nouveau' design. Refurbishment Lead, like all metals, suffers over the years from the elements and this results in the 'whitening' effect on the lead cames as shown in the before photo. After treatment, the lead can be restored to not only look better but also preserve it for many more years. Repairs As well as refurbishment of lead, we can also replace broken or cracked glass pieces, often without having to take out the panel. The real problem is matching up the colour and texture of the broken pieces but with one of the widest selection of new and old glass, we pride ourselves in closely matching the original. Wherever possible, the repairs will be done on-site but if there is too much damage such as that resulting from a break-in, the panel will have to removed and repaired at our studio. Alternative glass will always be fitted to replace the removed panel on a temporary basis until the panel is repaired. We always endeavour to complete the repairs within a maximum of 4 weeks after removing it.
