The stained glass 'Unknown Treasures' search

A recent trip to the Victoria Baths in Manchester (You may remember that they won the BBC Restoration Award in 2004) to view the recently renovated stained glass windows, made us realise that there must be many more buildings out there which have stunning stained glass panels but  have never really seen the light of day.  They certainly won't have been recognised as works of art.  We are not talking about the great Church windows as they have been well publicised and generally lovingly kept in good condition.  We are mainly referring to the many and varied public and private buildings that have stained glass windows and doors but have never been publicised and more importantly may have been left to deteriorate.  On our travels in Manchester and its surrounding areas, we have noted at least a dozen buildings with magnificent stained glass panels which are virtually unknown to the general public and several of these would benefit from restoration.  Town Halls, libraries, schools, colleges, company headquarters, hotels and private residences are a good source as they were often built at a time when buildings were meant to be impressive as well as functional.

We would like anyone who is aware of such stained glass panels within the Greater Manchester area, to take a photograph and send or e-mail it to us with the address of the building.  Not only will this prove a wonderful opportunity for the public ultimately to see the window, as it is hoped that the stained glass will be featured in a forthcoming book  but may also prove beneficial in generating funds to restore (if necessary) them to their former glory. We intend to establish a charitable trust purely to  help fund the cost of restoration of significant stained glass panels.  It may be worth emphasising that our company would not seek any of the restoration work.  The work would go to the company best suited and equipped to do the work at a realistic price. It would certainly be one of the aims of the trust to choose local companies, where possible, to conduct the restoration work

So the search is on.  if you have seen a special stained glass panel in the Greater Manchester area which you believe to be a candidate for our 'Unknown Treasures' then please photograph it and send the actual photo, together with your name, address and telephone number by post to us at:

'Unknown Treasures'. 6, Claremont Drive, Timperley. Altrincham. Cheshire WA14 5ND. (Photos cannot be returned)

or e-mail at enquiries@vintageglassstudio.co.uk

If the panel is deemed to be interesting enough to be shortlisted, we will contact you to arrange a visit to view the panel and also assess whether it is in need of restoration.

If this proves successful for the Greater Manchester area, then we will roll it out to other UK regions

Press Releases

We are just in the process of starting our search for ' Unknown Treasures' and will be contacting the local media in Greater Manchester to enlist the help of the general public in finding them. So watch this space.
